PUPPY SUPPLY LIST
Now raising a puppy is not all the same for every family just like children but here is a list of reccomended supplies to get you started.Feel free to print this out and take it with you to the pet store or I may also be able to pick these up for you since I get a nice discount on the items. I also feel a good training class with a trainer that has worked with beagles is also good. Start with a puppy socialization and go from there.
We use and highly reccommend NuVet Tablets to order a supply please call 1-800-474-7044 order code # 77734
1.CRATE for potty training and sleeping at night. Precision Pro Value crate is one I reccommend. I have always used the wire ones instead of plastic because they are more open. I suggest the 30" or 36". Make sure it has a divider panel for potty training. A blanket will do just fine for the bottom to start off. My care package includes a blanket that has the mom and littermates smell. The price on a 30" pen is $55 (30x21) or $65 for the 36x24. Petsmart has the icrate that is similar to this at $60 for the 30"+tax and shipping or the 36" for $70+ship and tax last time I priced them.
When their through the chewing stage then you can invest in a crate pad. I usually buy a smaller pad since mine curl up to sleep and if they get hot they can lay on the tray.
2. EXERSIZE PEN OR GATE for the kitchen. I highly reccommend this. You do not want your puppy running around the house unsupervised during the potty training period. Your puppy will spend alot of time in this. You may also purchase remmenant tile if your playpen will be on carpet just in case of accidents.
Some suggestions are the Midwest pens in at least 30" since beagles will try and climb. or www.dog.com has very different looking ones by Iris in Plastic. or if you prefer to keep puppy in kitchen or spare bathroom a gate. Also the white plastic pleypens for children can be used. They are marketed for kids and pets and may sometimes be found at used baby stores. Do not purchase the soft sided jeep playpens with the fabric mesh. Beagle puppies will make short work of these. Those are for the tiny toys like Maltese. I can get the 30" tall exercise pens for $65 since I buy three at a time. Please let me know if you would like me to purchase one for you if you are getting a puppy.
3. BOWLS for food and water I suggest stainless steel or crock style. Stainless in my opinion is the best. Some dogs can be allergic to plastic. My dogs do however drink from water bottles when they are in their crates so I don't have to worry about tipped bowls.
4. SMALL TRAINING BITS. Small is important since beagles are very food motivated. I like TRAIN ME NATURALS or Zukes brand mini treats. I also like the Natural Balance rolls. These usually come in sample sizes for a buck by the front registers at your local pet store. Slice up small bits for training.
5. Toys are an important part of being a puppy. Check for safety of the toys. Rope chews are great under supervised play but the string can become unattached so as I said supervised. Kong brand toys are highly reccommended for crate training. It gives your puppy something to look forward to when in the crate. Put a little puppy stuffing or Ziggies in it and your good to go. My puppies and dogs enjoy the tirebiters and Petstages toys. You can spot these by their colorful fabric and blue rubber. They look like baby toys. A soft fleece bear or bone is good for a pillow or to snuggle to. Any more than a few is to much. Rotate toys. Kong teething stick is available at $5.
6.NAME TAG. Better yet a microchip. The best way to getting a lost puppy/dog home.
7. COLLAR & LEASH Remember that puppies grow quick. Also either a seat belt attachment or travel crate for the car. It is against the law to have a roaming dog in the car and very unsafe.
8. TRAINING BOOK OR VIDEO and a magazine about beagles is reccomended.
9. FOOD a good quality puppy kibble. I feed either Canidae or Nutro . I will have a sample of the puppy food included in your puppy package. I will be including an article on feeding your beagle on my site.
If you need any help finding these items please contact me and I will be more than happy to help you. If you wish to add these item sto your puppy pack please let me know so I can have these on hand.
